The Group believes that development, at a grassroots level, will feed the sustained growth and development of South Africa. It was this vision that inspired the Datatec Educational and Technology Trust, which was established in March 2000 and aims to nurture the country's mathematics, science and technology talent.
One of the five initiatives supported by the trust is the Centre for Innovation, at Hilton College in the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands, which brings mathematics, science, entrepreneurship and computer skills training to local schools and communities. The centre is also used by Protec, a national organisation involved in technology skills training within disadvantaged communities.
Essential to any educational structure is a solid foundation, which takes the form of professional and accomplished teachers. Another initiative sponsored by the trust, The Maths Centre, understands this, and aims to uplift the standard of mathematics, science and technology teaching in government schools. The Maths Centre offers a vibrant and practical hub for learning these disciplines and serves as a resource base for mathematics, science and technology teachers.
Between the economically depressed areas of Ivory Park and Ebony Park lies the Siyakhula Bridging School - a little school with big ambitions. The Datatec Educational and Technology Trust identified Siyakhula as an important contributor to South Africa's growth and offered its support in empowering local residents through basic computer literacy skills. The school runs from a refurbished property that has been turned into an education and community centre and has allowed several unemployed residents to go on to find jobs as a result of their newly acquired skills.
Oliver's House in Benoni is another benefactor of the trust's support. Oliver's House provides free afterschool education to learners and the community in the Benoni CBD and surrounding areas. Tuition includes fi ve matric subjects as well as computer literacy and adult literacy classes.
Finally, the trust assists The Education Alive Training centre in Wynberg, Cape Town, which offers tuition to learners who struggle with maths, science and technical subjects. The centre also offers literacy classes for illiterate individuals. Education Alive is part of Applied Scholastics International and trains teachers, educators, parents, learners and college students in disadvantaged communities across the country.
ANALYSYS MASON GROUP
Analysys Mason takes its environmental responsibilities very seriously. To that end, the group is currently sourcing and showing preference to greener energy suppliers. Recent initiatives have encouraged staff to minimise waste, energy and transportation in an effort to reduce the corporate carbon footprint.
Over the past year Analysys Mason has raised money for charities both in the UK (Cystic Fibrosis UK, Teenage Cancer Trust, Chariots of Fire) and worldwide (Oxfam, Children in Need, The Blue Cross). Fundraising efforts have included a sponsored swimathon, marathon running and personal contributions by staff. Analysys Mason continues to encourage its employees to donate their time and efforts to local charities and children's sporting clubs.
LOGICALIS
Consistent with the Logicalis Group's decentralised structure, the policy is to encourage its operations to make their own contribution to the communities within which they work. Not only does this approach ensure operational buy-in at a local level, but it also means that monies are fed directly into the community that might otherwise be overlooked. All employees are encouraged to bring suitable opportunities to local management for review. The following is a list of just some of these initiatives.
Logicalis US has made donations and held fund-raising events for the following charities: Big Brothers, Big Sisters of Metropolitan Detroit which provides one-to-one mentoring to at-risk and disadvantaged children; Bobby Rahal Foundation which supports youth and family programmes as well as health research efforts nationwide and Pink Ribbon Roundup which raises money for cancer research.
Logicalis UK has committed to making annual donations for five years to the Berkshire Community Foundation, an independent charity supported by a number of major companies, which provides grants to small local voluntary groups that tackle needs at the grassroots of the community. For example, the foundation supports children and young people with special needs, people with a longterm disability, elderly people, the homeless and people with mental health needs
